Most consumed beer styles among craft beer drinkers Australia 2022

In a 2022 survey conducted among Australia’s craft beer drinkers, the leading styles of beer consumed among respondents were pale ales or extra pale ales (XPAs), with over 80 percent of those surveyed indicating that they drank these beers regularly. Additionally, around 77 percent said they had consumed India pale ales (IPAs) or double India pale ales (DIPAs).

Craft beer consumer profile

The highest proportion of Australia’s craft beer drinkers are based in New South Wales and Victoria, with the country’s craft beer consumer base disproportionately male. Full-strength beer is by far the most popular choice among Australia’s beer consumers, with over 70 percent of craft beer drinkers reporting consuming high-strength pints on a weekly basis. Nonetheless, low- and alcohol-free alternatives are gaining traction, with the Australian beer market having to evolve to meet changing consumer drinking habits.

The non- and low-alcoholic drinks market is expanding across the globe, and Australia is no exception. The revenue of the non-alcoholic segment of Australia’s beer market is expected to climb in the coming years from around 200 million in 2022 to just shy of 290 million by 2027. While non-alcoholic beer consumption remains relatively low across the country, a 2022 conducted survey among Australian consumers revealed that over 75 percent of respondents expected to increase or somewhat increase their consumption of non- and low-alcoholic beverages, with younger Australian consumers the most likely to hop on this trend.
